The customer challenge

Alyzia needed qualified employees who could work safely and efficiently in both baggage and cargo operations at Brussels Airport. Many potential candidates were unemployed job seekers without previous aviation experience.

The purpose

The programme aimed to address Alyzia’s recruitment needs while offering job seekers a concrete pathway to employment. VDAB and Bruxelles Formation financed the training, enabling participants to acquire the technical, safety and language skills required to start working at Alyzia.

The approach

In partnership with Alyzia, Aviato, VDAB and Bruxelles Formation, AHLEX developed a 124-hour dual-focus training programme. It combined technical knowledge, practical exercises, immersive learning, e-learning and 20 hours of Dutch language support

The realization

Approximately 10 groups of eight to ten participants have been trained each year. The programme covers ground operations, airside safety, baggage handling, cargo warehouse operations, security and workplace communication.

The result

Around 91% of participants completed the programme and 94% moved directly into employment at Brussels Airport after graduation.

From job seeker to airport professional

A training path preparing job seekers for direct employment in baggage and cargo handling at Alyzia.

A busy airport depends on skilled people behind the scenes. Every bag, cargo shipment and aircraft turnaround requires employees who understand the operation, follow strict safety and security procedures and communicate effectively with their colleagues.

Alyzia faced an ongoing need for employees who could work across both baggage and cargo operations at Brussels Airport. At the same time, unemployed job seekers were looking for a concrete opportunity to acquire new skills and move into sustainable employment.

Together, Alyzia, VDAB, Bruxelles Formation, Aviato and AHLEX transformed these two needs into one integrated recruitment and onboarding programme. VDAB and Bruxelles Formation financed the training, giving job seekers the opportunity to prepare for a new professional future. Alyzia provided a clear employment perspective, while Aviato supported candidate selection and alignment with the airport environment.

AHLEX translated the operational requirements into a comprehensive 124-hour learning pathway. Participants first became familiar with the aviation sector, airport operations and the standards that guide daily work. They then developed the technical knowledge and practical skills required for baggage handling, cargo operations, airside services, safe storage and secure handling.

The programme combined classroom theory with hands-on exercises, immersive learning, VR and e-learning. This approach allowed participants not only to understand procedures but also to practise essential skills and develop the right operational reflexes before entering the workplace.

Because the participants would work in a Dutch-speaking airport environment, the programme also included 20 hours of Dutch language training for French speaking candidates. This support helped them understand workplace instructions, communicate more confidently and integrate more easily into their future teams.

The programme achieves a completion rate of approximately 91%, while 94% of graduates move directly into employment at Brussels Airport. These results demonstrate the strength of a model in which recruitment, public financing, targeted training and direct employment are connected from the outset.

For participants, the programme is more than a training course. It is a structured pathway from unemployment to a new career. They leave with technical expertise, safety awareness, language confidence and the preparation needed to contribute to Alyzia’s operations from day one.
