Air cargo handler (ULD Build-up)

Summary

This course covers the principles and best practices of Unit Load Device (ULD) build-up in air cargo operations. It provides participants with an understanding of cargo warehouse processes, ULD handling and load planning, while introducing the industry regulations and operational requirements that support safe, compliant and efficient cargo handling.

Target Audience

This training is intended for personnel involved in the build-up, preparation, handling, or inspection of ULDs within air cargo operations, including:

• Air cargo handlers and warehouse staff.
• ULD build-up personnel.
• Employees responsible for sorting, building up, or securing cargo.
• Cargo agents and warehouse operators.
• Team leaders and supervisors in air cargo warehouses.
• Personnel responsible for ULD inspection, storage, or planning.
• New employees preparing for an operational role in air cargo handling.

Objectives

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

• Explain the main processes within an air cargo warehouse and the associated safety requirements.
• Recognise the materials, tools, and equipment used in the build-up and handling of ULDs.
• Identify the different types of Unit Load Devices and describe their construction, function, and certification requirements.
• Correctly inspect, handle, store, and prepare ULDs for use.
• Recognise and comply with applicable weight, dimension, and loading limitations.
• Apply the basic principles of ULD planning based on aircraft type, loading position, and cargo characteristics.
• Explain the relevant requirements of the IATA ULD Regulations and the Airport Handling Manual.
• Correctly distribute, build up, and secure loads using suitable nets, straps, and other restraint equipment.
• Recognise specific requirements for special cargo, including dangerous goods, live animals, and perishable goods.
• Correctly interpret and use relevant operational documents and records.
• Contribute to the safe, compliant, and efficient handling of air cargo.

Additional information

The training includes an in-depth analysis of scenarios based on real operational situations encountered at airports, together with interactive discussions with experienced airport operations professionals.

The course also includes practical workshop exercises. Protective gloves and safety footwear are mandatory.
