Summary

The Practical cargo Image Interpretation Training – 11.2.3.2 (C2) & 11.2.3.3 (C3) is a practical training course designed to teach participants how to correctly and systematically interpret images produced by security equipment.

During the training, participants develop their image-recognition skills through practical exercises using representative security images. They learn to recognise normal and suspicious objects, identify potential prohibited articles and take into account factors such as position, orientation, overlap, material type and the complexity of the screened item.

The training is specifically intended for personnel required to assess security images when screening cargo and mail, air carrier mail and materials, in-flight supplies or airport supplies.

Target Audience

This training is intended for personnel whose duties require them to interpret images produced by security equipment, including:

• Personnel screening cargo and mail under point 11.2.3.2
• Personnel screening air carrier mail and materials under point 11.2.3.3
• Personnel screening in-flight supplies
• Personnel screening airport supplies
• Security personnel operating X-ray, EDS or other relevant image-producing screening equipment
• Personnel required to make screening decisions based on security images

Objectives

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

• Systematically analyse images produced by the security equipment used
• Recognise and distinguish objects and materials displayed on security images
• Identify potential prohibited articles and suspicious components
• Recognise objects regardless of their position, orientation or partial overlap
• Identify anomalies and unusual image patterns
• Correctly use the relevant image-analysis functions of the equipment
• Assess complex and difficult-to-interpret images
• Make an appropriate security decision based on the analysed image
• Respond appropriately when an image cannot be cleared with sufficient certainty
• Demonstrate an adequate level of accuracy and consistency during practical image-recognition exercises

The training consists primarily of practical image-interpretation exercises using representative images produced by security equipment.

Participants must demonstrate the ability to correctly interpret images produced by security equipment.

For persons operating X-ray or EDS equipment, image interpretation forms part of the applicable initial certification or approval requirements.
