Summary

This e-learning module prepares participants for the airside driving assessment at Brussels Airport. It provides the essential theoretical knowledge required to understand the rules, responsibilities, risks, and operational conditions associated with driving in the airside environment.

The training covers the airport driving licence framework, key safety principles, airside traffic rules, the safe use of vehicles and rolling stock, airport infrastructure, and the correct response to exceptional circumstances. It also addresses the prevention of Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and the risks linked to unsafe or harmful equipment.

Interactive exercises and a practical quiz help participants test their understanding and prepare for the official assessment.

Everyone who has to drive a vehicle airside.

Objectives

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

• Explain the requirements and responsibilities associated with the airport driving licence
• Apply the main safety principles and traffic rules for driving airside
• Recognise and interpret airside signs, markings and signals
• Apply the correct priority rules for aircraft, vehicles and pedestrians
• Recognise the main airside vehicles, equipment and relevant airport infrastructure
• Identify and assess risks when driving near aircraft and operational areas
• Respond appropriately to adverse weather, reduced visibility, incidents and emergency situations
• Recognise, prevent and report FOD, damaged equipment and other unsafe situations
• Apply their knowledge to realistic airside driving situations
• Prepare effectively for the Brussels Airport airside driving assessment

Additional information

Important: to obtain a category A tarmac driving permit at Brussels Airport, the following conditions must be met:

• hold a valid airport identification badge;
• hold a valid Category B driving licence recognised in Belgium;
• have a professional role that genuinely requires driving airside;
• have a written request from the employer;
• pass the theoretical exam on airside traffic regulations.

Brussels Airport recommends completing AHLEX’s preparatory e-learning course before taking the exam.
