Plain English – ELP Exam Booster

Summary

This 16-hour training prepares airport staff working operationally on the manoeuvring area for the English Language Proficiency assessment (ELP). It helps participants communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively in English during normal, unexpected, and critical operational situations.

Participants learn to use Plain English through familiar everyday expressions and short, simple sentences, supplemented by ICAO phraseology. As the training progresses, they expand their vocabulary and learn to provide more detailed information, understand and give instructions, express opinions, and describe events, experiences, and expectations in their own words.

The training combines language development with practical scenarios from the airport environment. Particular attention is given to specific operational terminology, communication with air traffic control, and the correct use of Plain English when standard phraseology is insufficient.

Objectives

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

• Use clear and concise Plain English in operational situations
• Combine Plain English with appropriate ICAO phraseology
• Understand and use relevant airport and aviation terminology
• Understand instructions and questions from air traffic control and respond appropriately
• Describe operational situations, events and intentions clearly
• Clarify and paraphrase information to prevent misunderstandings
• Communicate effectively in routine, unexpected and critical situations
• Improve their pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, listening comprehension and interaction
• Prepare effectively for the English Language Proficiency (ELP) assessment

Additional information

The training course consists of four modules of four hours each.

To obtain the ELP certification, the candidate must then take an additional examination: the ELP assessment for the ICAO Language Proficiency Level 4 certificate.
