Plain English – 16 hrs

Short summary

In this 16-hour training course, airport employees operational in the manoeuvring area learn how to use Plain English in communication. The focus is on everyday expressions and simple phrases, supplemented by ICAO phraseology, to give and receive clear and concise instructions. Participants develop their language skills by practising scenarios, focusing on specific professional terminology and communication with air traffic control. The course concludes with an Aviato Academy participation certificate and an ICAO Language Proficiency Level 4 certificate.

Objectives

The EASA Easy Access Rules for Aerodromes impose a new requirement: language proficiency Plain English ICAO Operational Level 4 for airport staff operational in the manoeuvring area.

This will require the employee concerned to demonstrate Plain English language proficiency, both at the operational level and in the use of specific subject terminology for

• the English language; and
• any other language or languages used at the airport for radio communication with the airport’s air traffic control service.
